The Concept ...

The Collaborative is working to establish an independent birth and women's health care center in the San Antonio area by late 2010. We envision a state-of-the-art, non-profit, LEED-certified facility, where women will be greeted by an uncommon mix of physicians, midwives, therapists, health educators and nurses. These practitioners will work together to ensure the highest quality of compassionate, evidenced-based care.

Here, low-risk women will have options in their care and will be given the education and support to make effective choices - before, during and after the birth of their child. Here, they will be taught that pregnancy and childbirth are amazing and beautiful gifts to treasure.

We believe the result will be educated, empowered women, stronger families, and healthier children. Oh, and last but not least, a tremendous cost savings from reduced interventions.

As we formulate the specifics and refine the concept, we're open to any innovative ideas that may come our way. Once the initial center is successful, our goal is to share our lessons learned and help other communities replicate the concept on a larger scale, so that every woman has access to this level of care. Maybe that's something that you can volunteer to help with.

It's time we change the way we look at pregnancy and birth in South Texas, and the choices we offer our women and children...

It's time for a new path forward...
