The Movie: Compelled to explore the subject of birth after the delivery of her first child, actress Ricki Lake recruits filmmaker Abby Epstein to question the way American women have babies. As Epstein uncovers some surprising answers, her own pregnancy adds a very personal dimension to The Business of Being Born. Educational, inspirational and dramatic, the movie is a must-see for anyone even thinking of giving birth.
The Collaborative: This event will serve as the Collaborative's kickoff event. The non-profit organization was formed in August 2007 to educate women and families on birth options, as well as create a local birth and women's health center that will give women a range of options in their birth and reproductive care.
"The Collaborative was established to bring a hybrid birth center to South Texas - a place where doctors and midwives will work together to bring low-risk women the best possible care, while providing emergency medical backup if problems arise during delivery," stated Brian MacGillivray, MD., co-founder and current board President.
"Our group is looking for a way to offer low-risk women birth options that are not readily available to them today. We've been able to pull together a great group of people we believe can facilitate a community venture of this magnitude - not only building a top-notch, environmentally sustainable birth center, but also creating a place that will educate and empower women and families over the long-term," noted Robyn Thompson, MSW, MPH, co-founder and current board Secretary.
